Four days in Playa del Carmen is the sweet spot. Long enough to find your rhythm, short enough that you never have a slow afternoon. This itinerary is built around staying in Playacar Phase 1 — specifically Casa Karma — which puts you within a 15-minute walk of everything that actually matters.
We've hosted hundreds of guests at Casa Karma over the years, and these are the days they talk about when they get home. No filler, no tourist traps — just the best version of this coastline.
Day 1: Arrive, Decompress, Settle In
Your first afternoon is not for sightseeing. Drop your bags, pour a drink from the welcome bar, and get horizontal by the pool. The Caribbean will still be there tomorrow.
For dinner on night one, walk five minutes north to La Cueva del Chango — an open-air jungle restaurant that feels like eating inside a rainforest. Order the cochinita pibil tacos and the hibiscus margarita. You'll be back before the trip is over.
Request early check-in when you book direct — we accommodate it whenever possible so you're not waiting in the heat with your luggage.
Day 2: Beach Morning, Fifth Avenue Afternoon
Wake up early. The beach in front of Casa Karma at 7am — before the loungers fill — is one of the best moments of the whole trip. Bring your coffee outside and watch the pelicans. Then head to Yogaloft (a 15-minute walk) for a 9am vinyasa class before the heat sets in.
After yoga, walk or take a 5-minute taxi to Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) for the afternoon. Skip the souvenir shops and head straight to:
- Ah Cacao — the best coffee on Fifth Ave, plus housemade chocolate
- Inti — Peruvian-Nikkei fusion that books up fast; reserve a day ahead
- La Diferencia — rooftop bar with Caribbean views, perfect for sunset
"The beach at 7am, before anyone else is awake, is worth the whole trip by itself." — A Casa Karma guest, March 2025
Day 3: Cenote Day Trip
This is the day everyone talks about. Book a private driver the night before (ask us — we have trusted contacts) and head to Cenote Cristalino, about 45 minutes south. Arrive before 10am to beat the crowds. Crystal-clear freshwater, cliff jumping, snorkeling over ancient rock formations.
On the way back, stop at El Pescadito in PDC for fish tacos. Then evening at the villa: request a private chef through us and do dinner poolside. This is the night guests remember most.
Cenote Cristalino is cash-only (~$8 USD entry). Bring pesos and a dry bag. Go on a weekday — weekends bring tour buses.
Day 4: Slow Morning, Departure Ready
Your last morning is for the beach. Nothing else. Late checkout is available when you book direct with us — we'll do our best to give you until 1pm so you're not rushing.
If your flight is evening, store your bags at the villa and spend the afternoon at Mamita's Beach Club — day beds, cocktails, and the Caribbean until it's time to go.
- Late checkout — ask when booking direct, we accommodate when possible
- Bags stored at the villa while you enjoy your last afternoon
- Taxi to Cancún airport is ~75 minutes — leave by 3pm for a 6pm flight
What to Skip
In the spirit of making every hour count: skip the Xcaret Park (long lines, tourist pricing, nothing you can't experience better independently), the swim-with-dolphins operations (ethically fraught), and any restaurant on the Quinta Avenida strip that has a hostess outside with a laminated menu photo. Trust the places without signs.
